My comments are presented below.
1. I concur with the proposed location of the additional monitoring well. I also concur with taking soil
samples southwest of the elevator room. However, since the lateral extent of soil contamination
southeast, east, and northwest of the elevator also has not been defined, additional soil samples need
to be taken in these locations. Thus, the proposed number of samples may not be adequate. The
sampling program should be flexible enough to allow your consultant to step out from a contaminated
location until the nondetectable location is established. The vertical extent of soil contamination
should be defined by determining nondetectable levels at a sample location or taking soil samples
just above the first groundwater.
2. At each location,a sample for waste extraction test(WET) analysis should be taken at the same
sampling point which has the highest total concentration. For total petroleum hydrocarbons in the
gasoline range and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes, the toxicity characteristic leaching
potential procedure should be used instead of the WET.
3. Since the new monitoring well will be surveyed,I recommend that the existing wells be surveyed
also to ensure that the water levels are based on accurate reference points.
4. In reporting the investigation results, the soil sample results, including those from previous
investigations, should be plotted on a site map with a convenient scale. The site soil conditions can
be easily discerned if the results are presented in this manner. The report also should include at least
two maps showing the profile of the vadose zone as viewed from north to south and east to west.
By 15 July 1997,please submit a report summarizing the investigation results. Also,I request that you
inform me at least 48 hours prior to initiation of field work so that I may be present to observe and/or split
samples. You may call me at(916)255-3049 if you have any questions.
PHILIP S.
