17 February 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0875
3.1. PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
Upon approval of this work plan, a soil boring permit will be obtained from the PHS-EHD. In
addition,an updated health and safetyplan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety
and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, 1985). Prior to mobilization, the soil probe boring locations will be clearly
marked and a utility clearance obtained through Underground Service Alert.
3.2. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
AGE proposes to advance four soil probe borings using direct push technology in the vicinity of the
former oil water separator to evaluate the lateral and vertical extent of the petroleum hydrocarbon
impacted soil and to assess ground water for the known contaminants.
Based on the petroleum hydrocarbon-impact to soil, AGE proposes soil boring in the locations
illustrated in Figure 2.Each boring will be advanced until ground water is encountered or to a depth
of 35 feet bsg. The borings will be installed at the edges of the oil water separator excavation to
define the vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbons and solvents.A grab ground water sample will
be collected from the borings if groundwater is encountered. The proposed probe boring locations
may be modified due to field observations or additional borings may be advanced with approval by
the PHS-EHD.
Soil samples will be collected at 5-foot intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg extending to the total probe
boring depths.Field procedures for advancement of probe borings and collection of soil samples are
presented in Section 4.1.1. Selected soil samples from each probe boring will be submitted for
laboratory analysis by a State of California Department of Health Services(DHS)-certified laboratory
for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons-all(TPH-all)in accordance with EPA Method 8015-modified,
• BTEX in accordance with EPA Method 8260,
• Oxygenating fuel additives tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl
tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME), and methyl tertiary butyl
ether(MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8260,
• Volatile organic/chlorinated hydrocarbons(CL/HC)in accordance with EPA Method 8260,
• LUFT metals cadmium, trivalent chromium, nickel, lead and zinc in accordance with EPA
Method7000, and hexavalent chromium in accordance with EPA Method 7196,
Advanced GeoEnviromncntal,Inc.
