❑ Assemble work group and discuss zone delineation, present conditions,
levels of protection, responsibilities, access points, decontamination
procedures, and emergency site egress point(s).
1.
13Don the specified level of proteIction before entering the site and complete
the entire decontamination process before exiting.
4
6.2 Monitoring Procedures
Air monitoring equipment will be used tolmneasure airborne levels of organic vapors
during sampling activities at the site. Monitoring will be used to confirm that the proper
level of protection is being used. Monitoringlwill be conducted using an organic:vapor
analyzer (OVA) consisting of a photoionization device (PID) or flame ionization device
(FID). Based on the available information on! vapor components potentially present at the
site and the results of the initial OVA readi "gs, the HSO will determine if additional
monitoring equipment is required.
The OVA will be calibrated in accordance; with the manufacturer's instructions before
each day's activities, and a calibration check ,will be conducted on the instrument at the
r` end of each work day. Calibration will be documented in the field log.
At the beginning of each work day, background readings will be obtained at an upwind
location. OVA readings will be measured in the breathing zone when site work is
initiated. The breathing zone will be monitored at 30- to 60-minute intervals or more
frequently if OVA readings are elevated. The1OVA will be held approximately 36 inches
above the sample area for breathing zone readings. If OVA measurements confirm the
presence of organic vapors at sustained concentrations greater than 10 parts per million ,
(ppm) above background, field personnel wearing modified Level D PPE will be instructed
to move to an upwind location. instrument spikes exceeding the action level do not
necessitate an upgrade. If the concentrations diminish below 10 ppm, work may.
4 continue.
However, if concentrations in the field personnel breathing zone are sustained above 10
ppm appropriate air-purifying respirators will'be worn. If°field team members are already
in Level C PPE, OVA readings will be used to check that the appropriate level of
{x S:\BFS\ST0CKT0N\HSP001) 10/15/99 6-2
k
!F
