• Unknown chemicals should be characterized utilizing the Hazcat protocol outlined in section 7.5
Identifying Unknown Waste above.
USE YOUR RESOURCES
• D.O.T. HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TABLE (49 CFR 172.101): If listed here, this will provide the
necessary information to properly segregate, transport and manage the materials.
• DOT PRECEDENCE TABLE (49 CFR 173.2A): Helps assign proper hazard class and packing
protocol for mixtures.
• CONTAINER HAZARD MARKINGS: As per OSHA, hazards associated with a chemical are to
be communicated on the container in the form of Globally Harmonized System (GHS)
pictograms and/or Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS). See Appendix N- Haz
Comm. (Any chemical with a HMIS or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) rating with a
"2" or higher in a category and associated special hazard will most likely fall into that DOT
hazard class).
• SAFETY DATA SHEETS (SDS) formerly called MSDS's AND CHEMICAL DATABASES
• PACKING GUIDELINES: The packing guidelines reference facility restrictions, quick common
chemical segregation lists, and take in to account EPA treatment standards for packing
categories.
• QUALIFIED STAFF: If you are unable to identify something using available resources, call your
supervisor or the Operations Coordinator for assistance. Do not pack items that are not properly
classified.
9. SITE OPERATIONS
Satisfaction of each participant is the key to the success of the facility. Individual efforts of personnel
will influence the overall outcome. Our goal is to complete the project as smoothly, efficiently and
professionally as possible while maintaining the highest possible safety standards. It is the entire
team's responsibility to keep the waste stream flowing in an orderly fashion through close teamwork.
The PM or OC will oversee these operations and ensure that activities are performed timely and in a
high quality manner.
9.1 SAFETY
Safety is the ultimate criterion when performing all tasks. A safety meeting will precede any activities
every day at the site. All participants must understand the safety aspects of the project, the safety
procedures, and the location of all safety equipment. Employees should seek assistance if their safety
is compromised at any time. A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) will be performed daily to cover all tasks
being performed.
9.2 COMMUNICATION
Personnel must know their supervisor and who is responsible within their work areas. Any difficulties
should be communicated to the PM or OC.
