• 23 Apri12002 <br /> AGE-NC Project No 95-0142 <br /> Page 15 of 16 <br /> 4 6 1 Soil Vapor Extraction Piping System <br /> I <br /> A network of two-inch diameter,schedule 40 PVC piping will be installed in 6-inch wide by 12-inch <br /> deep trenches at the site The PVC piping will be routed from each SVE well head to a vapor dropout <br /> drum, the vapor dropout drum will be directly connected to the VES A PVC ball valve will be <br /> installed at each SVE well head so that vapor can be drawn from each well independently A plan <br /> of the proposed piping system and enclosed VES unit location are depicted in Figure 4a <br /> The proposed location of the VES unit is near the southeast corner at the site,immediately adjacent <br />' to the ground water extraction system, this equipment location will allow the site occupant to <br /> conduct their day to day business without interference from the operation of the VES as well as the <br /> ground water extraction units The VES unit will be secured within the same chain-linked, gated <br /> enclosure as the ground water extraction unit <br /> 4 6 2 Soil Vapor Extraction Monitoring Activities <br /> During the"start-up"period for the SVE system,organic vapor and operational parameters(air flow, <br /> • combustion temperature, volume of processed vapor, oxygen level and the lower explosive limits) <br /> will be monitored on a daily basis The anticipated start-up period will be approximately one week <br /> tAfter the one-week start-up period, the VES unit will be monitored weekly to monitor cleanup <br /> progress, using a photo-ionization detector (PID) on a Model 580A organic vapor meter(Thermo <br /> Environmental Instruments Inc ) to document destruction of recovered hydrocarbon vapors and a <br /> Dwyer DS-200 flow sensor to measure flow The PID readings will be recorded at the influent point <br /> and effluent point of the VES unit (Figure 4b) Operational parameters (air flow, combustion <br /> temperature, volume of processed vapor, oxygen level and the lower explosive limits)will also be <br /> measured on a weekly basis to ensure optimal destruction of recovered hydrocarbon vapors <br /> Vapor samples will be collected on a monthly basis from the influent and effluent points of the VES <br /> utilizing the vacuum pump(Figure 4b) The samples will be collected in Tedlar bags and transported <br /> in a chilled container under chain-of-custody procedure to a DHS-certified laboratory for analysis <br /> 4 6 3 Progress/Confirmation Soil Sampling <br />' After approximately six months of operation or,when efficibncy of the unit has declined or vapor <br /> pP Y <br /> recovery has become asymptotic, soil samples will be collected from the "core" petroleum <br />' hydrocarbon Impacted area Analytical results of the soil samples will serve to approximate <br /> • remaining petroleum hydrocarbon levels and determine if continuing remedial operation is necessary <br />' Advanced GeoEnvironmentab Inc <br />
