EMU` W---8_ 0w "M,
n ,
,
Y'A
1=
Mr. John Randall
April 20, 1990
Page 4
Two samples were taken from Stockpile A, and 10 samples from
Stockpile B. See figure 2 for approximate locations of the
Stockpiles and the sampling grid. The samples were collected
sm from approximately 6-inches below the surface of the piles in
2-inch by 6-inch brass tubes, sealed irk foil, capped, taped,
labeled and transported on ice to a state of California-certified
laboratory. The samples were analyzed for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) , and for total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH)-as-gasoline using modified U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) Methods 5020/ 8020/8015. See Table 2 for
results of the sample analyses in tabulated form. The laboratory
reports are attached. The analytical results ranged from 88
parts per million (ppm) to below detection levels (ND) . The
Method Detection Limit (MDL) for TPH-as-gasoline is 10 ppm,
In accordance with the above-meritioned work plan, Groundwater
Technology recommends that soils contaminated with volatile
hydrocarbons (Stockpile B) be aerated until hydrocarbon levels
are reduced to below MDL, then used to backfill the excavation.
In order to aerate these soils effectively, they should be spread
over the area in the northwest corner of the site. Once analyzed
to be below the MDL, these soils should then be u'`l to backfill
the excavation.
once the existing excavations have been backfilled with the
aerated soil, three soil borings will be drilled on site., as
described in the work plan. Borings wil3 be drilled with the
--of---installin 4-inch-diameter-groundwater-moriitoring - --- -"- -
wells.
J iR1;'SI111'AYFH
