Chevron/Stockton g
November 1989
SOIL SAMPLING
Once the GTI field representative determines that the
excavation can or should no longer be extended in a given
w direction, soil samples for laboratory analyses will be
collected. Soil samples will be collected at the discreticn of
the GTI representative on site. Figure 3 shows an anticipated
grid pattern that would be used to determine sample locations
taken for field-headspace analyses if the excavation proceeds as
anticipated, but if the GTI field representative determined it
necessary, more samples would be collected from the bottom of
each excavation pit. Based on the field-headspace readings and
on other field observations, selected soil samples will be
collected for laboratory analyses. Samples will be selected in
such a way as to determine if the excavation has reached the
f-w
limits of hydrocarbon content in the accessible soil. Samples
for laboratory analyses will be collected in 2-inch-diameter by
6-inch-lone} brass sample tubes. Sample tubes will be sealed with
aluminum foil, capped and the caps wrapped with plastic tape to
h. produce an air-tight seal. Samples will then i:a labeled and
stored on ice for transportation to the state-certified GTEL
w Environmental Laboratories, Inc. (GTEL) facility in Concord,
California under Chain--of-Custody Manifest.
Standard Operating Procedures 14, 15 and 40 describe
applicable soil sampling procedures, and SOP 11 describes chain-
of-custody procedures (See Appendix B) .
Soil samples will be analyzed for the presence of BTEX and {
TPH-as-gasoline using modified U.S. Environmental Protection
M+ Agency (FPA) Methods 5030/802018015. Samples taken from the
----- --------vicinity -oi the waste-oil-tank--will--also be -analyzed -for the-------
presence
he- --presence of TPH-Es-diesel using £A.A Method 8015, for the presence
of total oil-and-grease (TOG) using EPA Method' 3550/APHA SM 503
LL,,Gknrxuu.tirt:k
