J. Hunter & Associates, the project manager, and <br /> in response to your letter dated 5/2/95, Ground Zero Analysis, Inc. <br /> (Ground Zero) has prepared this workplan for performing site <br /> characterization at the subject site (Figure 1) . <br /> i <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> On July 12 , 1989 Jim Thorpe Oil , Inc. removed a 1, 000-gallon fuel <br /> underground storage tank (UST) from the site. A strong gasoline <br /> odor and discolored soil was noted at the west end of the former <br /> UST pat in the vicinity of the former pump island. Two soil <br /> samples were collected from beneath each end of the former UST. <br /> Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) ; benzene, toluene, <br /> ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) ; ethylene dibromide (EDB) : <br /> and organic lead were not detected in the sample collected from <br /> beneath the east end of the former UST. TPHg," BTEX, and EDB were <br /> detected at concentrations of 2 , 200 parts-per-million (ppm) , 34 <br /> ppm. 420 ppm, 230 ppm, 1, 100 ppm, and 7 . 6 ppm, respectively in the <br /> sample collected from beneath the west end of the former UST. <br /> Organic lead was not detected in the sample. <br /> In January 1990, additional soil was overexcavated from the former <br /> UST pit. TPHg toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were detected at <br /> concentrations of 1, 600 ppm, 95.4 ppm, 49 . 2 ppm, and 280 ppm, <br /> respectively in soil sample SW-2W collected at a depth of <br /> approximately 13 feet below ground surface (bgs) in the western <br /> sidewall of the excavation. Benzene, EDB and organic lead were not <br /> detected, TPHg, BTEX, EDB and organic lead were not detected in <br />. soil samples collected from the north, east and south sadewalls of <br /> the excavation. BTEX were detected at maximum concentrations of <br />
