MOBILE - GEOCHEMISTRY
Sample Collection
Mini-cans with a male quick:disconnect end
1. If a leak/tracer compound is required; place leak compound around base of probe
where it enters the ground and around sampling assembly. An easy way to do this is to
lightly dampen paper towels with isopropyl'alco.hol (rubbing alcohol)-and place near
probe tubing and sampling assembly. DO NOT USE.EXCESS TRACER.
2. Connect mini-can to the sampling assembly(photo 4). Mini-cans without valves will
begin to fill. if mini-can has valve, open valve to commence filling.. The vacuum gauge
should immediately go to at least—2.5"of mercury. If not, the mini-can should be
discarded and another one used:
Minkcans with no male quick-disconnect end
1. Disconnect female quick disconnect from the sampling assembly(photo 5) and connect
minkcan to sampling assembly at the 1l4" Swagelok fitting male fitting (photo 6).
2. If a leak/tracer-compound•is required, place leak compound around base of.probe
where it enters the ground and around sampling assembly as described above.
3. Open valve to collect sample.. The vacuum.gauge should immediately go to at least-
25"'of mercury. If not,the mini-can should be discarded and another one used.
Collection Notes:
The mini-can should fill in 2 to 5 minutes depending upon soil permeability. If mini-can
not filled within 5 minutes, make note of vacuum reading. Allow to.fill for another 5
minutes. If mini=can not filled after 10 minutes, make note of vacuum reading and stop
collection. If the next mini-,can also not filling at proper rate, the flow restrictor may be
clogged, so replace with spare,
If water droplets are observed, stop collection and note the presence of water on
the sample label and chain-of-custody.
Keep mini-cans.out of sun and do not chill. Label with ballpoint pen.
DO NOT USE A SHARPIE!
Wash hands or remove gloves between samples to ensure tracer compound is not on
your fingers when connecting fittings.
Flushing of Sample Assembly Between.: amples
Flush sampling assembly between samples by connecting syringe with male quick-disconnect
to female quick-disconnect and flush with ambient air 3 times-using syringe.
Problems&Technical Support
Call H&P at(800)834-9888
2
