2315 El Dorado, Stockton
Page 2
various parameter chemicals (including MTBE). DIPE was detected in the
groundwater samples taken in December 1997.
The report contained quality control summaries of the analyses performed by Entech,
Inc., but did not contain quality control (QC) summaries of the analyses performed by
Sherwood Labs. QC results from Sherwood Labs were also not included in the
previous quarterly monitoring report dated December 6, 1999. In a telephone
conversation on February 10, 2000, Sherwood Labs expressed to this office that quality
control results were not provided along with the analytical results to Geological
Technics, Inc. Sherwood Labs agreed to submit the quality control results of the
analyses of the samples from the latest'quarterly monitoring event to this office via
facsimile.
Provide the missing portion of the table in Appendix A to PHS/EHD by March 1,
2000. Include QC results of corresponding analyses in all future reports.
The contamination plume in both groundwater and soil has not been defined vertically
or laterally. PHS/EHD recommends further investigation to determine the vertical
and lateral extent of the plume in both soil and groundwater. Loss of volatile and
prevention of cross-contamination in both soil and groundwater samples must be
controlled. Due to the depth of the contamination, PHS/EHD recommends
providing soil physical characteristics such as permeability, dry bulk density, porosity,
moisture, and organic carbon content in order to evaluate the potential vertical and
lateral migration of the plume. PHS/EHD recommends employing the cone
penetration test with simul-probe type technology for both sampling and soil
classification. Submit a work plan to PHS/EHD by April 1, 2000.
If you have any questions, please feel free to.contact Jeffrey Wong at (209) 468-0335.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
 G
REHS Margare Lagorio, RES4effrey4ong,
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor
c: RWQCB, Central Valley Region - Marty Hartzell
c: Geological Technics, Inc. - Raynold I.
