J Jar ,
Geological rechaia Inc. Page 12
Interim Remedial Action Plan
Project No.723.2
March 7,2005
3.2.2 Groundwater Treatment—Air stripping with carbon filtration of vapor effluent
The, extracted groundwater will be treated by a combination of air stripping and carbon
L ` filtration as outlined in section 3.1.2.2 above.
3.2.3 System Control & Monitoring
r GTI will •perform monitoring of the system to obtain maximum contaminant removal
6 efficiency and compliance with regulatory permits. This will include:
• Groundwater elevation measurements in site wells;
• Water flow measurements for mass removal calculations;
• Sampling ports on the effluent of the dual phase extraction system, air stripper and
carbon units.
r Water sampling will be conducted as outlined above in Section 3.1.3.2
4.0 ASSESSMENT OF REMEDIAL EFFECTIVENESS
4.1S ource Removal
After the dual phase extraction system is installed and is operating at full capacity, a radius of
influence test will be performed. The radius of influence testing will be performed to ensure
that the extraction is sufficient to affect the entire site.
Vapor concentration and flow rate measurements will be used to determine contaminant
removal rates. GTI will attempt to quantify the amount of residual contamination by
determining the amount of contaminants removed and subtracting from the original estimates
provided in our January 21, 2004 "Additional Site Characterization report.
If the system reaches asymptotic conditions.then it will be placed in pulse mode to allow the
subsurface to equilibrate. A work plan addendum will be prepared for SJC/EHD prior to
placing the system in pulse mode.
4.2 Deep Aquifer Plume Control
This effort to control the groundwater plume. is both an interim remedial action and an
ongoing pilot test to determine aquifer response to pumping. Until the continuous soil boring
for the new extraction well is, accomplished and the extraction actually begins we do not
know if the 70 feet bgs sand unit is a confined or unconfined zone.
The field data will be analyzed by constructing time-drawdown graphs. The variables used in
the common aquifer testing formula can be obtained from the graphs. The exact equations
that will be used and hence the corresponding graphs_ are not known at this time because it is
