Once full the chamber is sealed with a pneumatically actuated
(N2 gas) solenoid valve and the apparatus is brought to the surface. The sample chamber is
carefully emptied using a bottom-emptying device thus reducing the possibility of sample
agitation and volatilization. Once the sample container (40-m1 VOA) is filled and capped,
the bottle will be inverted, tapped, and checked for headspace bubbles. The sample container
is identified and labeled with a unique designation, inserted into foam holders and placed in
an ice chest cooled to 4°C for transport to the laboratory.
Once the borehole has extended below groundwater, pore water and soil samples will be
collected at geologically significant different units using the SimulProbe. It should be noted
that collection of pore water samples might not be successful in clay units.
Soil boring permits will be secured as necessary and the local regulatory agency will be
notified 48 hours prior to commencing work. The subsurface will be cleared of underground
utilities by notifying Underground Service Alert.
Soil Sample Analysis
Based on field screening observations up to four soil samples from MW-201 will be
submitted to Sherwood Laboratories of Hilmar (State Certified Laboratory 41400). Samples
will be analyzed for the following:
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX)by EPA method 8020.
• Gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-Gas) by EPA method 503018015(m).
• Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) by EPA method 8020.
• In addition, two soil samples will be analyzed for the fuel oxygenate suite (MTBE, DIPE,
ETBE, TAME & TBA) by EPA method 8260.
The detection limits for these compounds are listed below. A Chain of Custody will be
completed for all samples collected and tracked to ensure sample integrity.
Detection Limits: BTEX MTBE-8020 Ethers-8260 TBA-8260 TPH-G
Soil (µg/Kg) 3.0 50 5 20 1,000
Soil Pore Water Sample Analysis
Up to four soil-pore water samples from MW-201 will be submitted to Sherwood
Laboratories of Hilmar (State Certified Laboratory #1400).
