standing a few minutes, very fine silty sand settled out There was no odor or other
evidence of contami- nation The hole was thoroughly grouted with a cement/bentomte
slurry
The probe truck was then set up on the spot marked for soil probe #5, refer to PLATE
V for it's location After thoroughly decontaminating the equipment, work began at
1305 The pipe was pushed and hammered to 40', the soil was much denser and harder to
penetrate than SP-6 The pipe was pulled up a short distance to disengage the point A
weighted electronic tape was run and showed that water was entering the hole at about V/
minute A stainless steel bailer was lowered into the pipe on clean monofilament line and
was used to fill 3 VOA's with slightly turbid water The water had less sediment than
taken from SP-6 The pipe was then retrieved and thoroughly cleaned to avoid the
possibility of cross-contamination The clean pipe was then driven very slowly to 60',
which was just about the maximum depth the probe unit could penetrate The pipe was
raised to 57', 3' off bottom, and the tape was run to check for entry A small diameter
bailer was run inside the pipe, but it kept plugging up with very muddy, silty water After
retreiving and cleaning the bailer several tames, it became stuck near bottom Continued
attempts to free it were unsuccessful 3 joints of pipe (12)were withdrawn when the
bailer came free Because the integrity of the hole was compromised, it was not possible
to obtain a water sample There was not enough time left to remove the pipe, grout the
. hole, decontaminate the tools, and place another hole The hole was grouted with a
cement/bentonite slurry under the direction of the geologist The water samples were
transferred under chain of custody from Mr Hunter to Mark McMurray They were to be
delivered to TEG's laboratory for analysis It was agreed by Mr Hunter&. Mr Sasson
that the location previously marked for SP-3, on E Adams street, would not be used -
that site is shown on PLATE IV
October 8, 1997 -Mark McMurray mobilized a TEG strataprobe truck on a spot about
3 5' east of SP-5, which was placed earlier The new location is called SP-5A as shown
on PLATE V Wm Hunter, RG, amved at 0905, a TEG helper arrived at 0910 Clean
pipe was pushed and driven to 60' at 0925 The pipe was then pulled off the tip and raised
about 18" A weighted electronic tape was run to bottom - there was no fluid entry after
sitting for 30 minutes The pipe was then pulled up to 57' at 1000, the tape acted like the
tip was still attached to the bottom of the pipe A 4'joint of pipe was pulled out, and the
rods used to detach the tip were rerun They went out the bottom of the pipe, indicating
the tip had come off The weighted tape was rerun, but would not go out the bottom of
the pipe There was no indication of water at 1010, and the pipe was raised 2 feet, (9' of
hole open below the pipe ) Water entry was extremely slow, and only one full VOA of
very silty muddy water was collected by 1230 hours The bailer was covered with wet silt
and clay after each run It was determined that one VOA would be sufficient for analysis
l for EPA 8260, and possibly other tests Steve Sasson of the County EHD was present
5
