Guide Earthwork Specifications
Page 3
IMPORT MATERIAL- Material obtained from off-site borrow areas.
ASTM SPECIFICATIONS - The 2001 Edition of the American Society for Testing and Materials
Standards.RELATIVE COMPACTION - The ratio, expressed as a percentage, of the in-place dry
density of the Engineered Fill material to the maximum density of the same material as determined
by ASTM Test Designation D1557-00.
OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT - The water content as determined by ASTM Test Designation
D1557-00 that corresponds to the maximum dry density.
CLEARING AND PREPARATION
OF BUILDING PAD AND PAVEMENT AREAS
General site clearance shall include the removal of surface vegetation, trees, pavements, fences, rubble,
rubbish, soil stockpiles, and any other debris. Any underground pipes within two feet of original or final
grade (whichever is lower) shall be removed. Existing loose fill materials as designated by the Soil
Engineer shall be removed. Depressions shall be drained of water and cleaned out of all loose and/or
saturated materials. Excavations resulting from the removal of the above items, as well as excavations,
designated necessary by the Soil Engineer to remove any loose and/or saturated soil deposits, shall be
sloped back to allow through passage of earthwork equipment, cleaned out to expose firmundisturbed
soils, and backfilled with engineered fill in accordance with these specifications.
Following clearance, all building pads, and the area five feet beyond, shall be over-excavated to a depth
of two feet(2')relative to existing grades. The exposed excavation subgrade should be proof rolled in
the presence of the Soil Engineer. Pavement areas shall be scarified to a depth of eight inches (8") and
brought to a uniform near optimum moisture content. The scarified and moisture conditioned soils shall
be recompacted in place to at least ninety percent(90%) relative compaction. Where necessary, grade
may then be restored with engineered fill placed and compacted in accordance with these specifications.
All excavations shall be performed to the lines and grades and within the tolerances specified on the
project drawings. All overexcavation below the grades specified shall be backfilled at the Contractor's
expense and shall be compacted in accordance with the specifications of this report.
REQUIREMENTS FOR FILL MATERIAL
All fill materials must be approved by the Soil Engineer prior to importation to the site. All imported fill
j material shall be nonexpansive with a plasticity index of twelve(12)or less. These materials shall be soil
or soil/rock mixtures which contain less than three percent(3%) by weight of organic matter or other
deleterious substances. The fill material shall not contain rocks or rubble fi-agments over three inches(Y)
in greatest dimension. On-site soils are suitable for use as engneered fill.
I
I
i
I
I
