23 March 2001
AGE-NC Project No 97-0301
Page 2of11
' 21 SOIL SAMPLING
Soil data has previously been collected to,a depth of 60 feet bsg from MW-1, located less than five
feet from soil boring MW-5,therefore discrete soil samples were collected from soil boring MW-5
' at 10 foot Intervals from 25 to 65 feet bsg and at 5 foot Intervals from 70 to 100 feet bsg Soil
samples were collected at 5 foot intervals from 15 to 40 feet bsg from soil boring MW-6 and at 15-
foot, 30-foot and 40-foot depths from boring MW-7 because of LAR equipment difficulties Soil
samples were collected from MW-5, MW-6 and MW-7 utilizing a California split-spoon sampler
loaded with 2-inch by 6-Inch brass sleeves The sampler was driven by dropping a 140-pound weight
from a height of 30 inches The number of blows required to drive each 6-inch length of the sampler
(blow counts)was recorded on boring logs by an AGE staff geologist, boring logs are in Appendix
A
Soil samples were preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets,
capping and sealing with tape Each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with soil boring
' designation, depth, time, date and sampler's initials
Each preserved sample was logged on a chain-of-custody form, placed in a chilled container and
transported to a California Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory for analysis
for
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline, diesel and kerosene (TPH-g, TPH-d
and TPH-k, respectively) by EPA Method 8015M,
' • Volatile aromatic compounds - benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and
methyl-tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) by EPA Method 8020, and
' • Methanol, ethanol, ethylene dibromide (EDB), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), tertiary
butanol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tert butyl ether (ETBE), tert amyl methyl
ether(TAME), and confirmation of MTBE by EPA Method 8260 Modified
'
One soil sample, MW-5 at 35 feet bs (designated MW5-35 was submitted to A Keith Kaufman
O p g( )
for microbial enumeration and physicochemical analysis to determine feasibility of bioremediation
' at the site
' Two soil samples (MW5-25 and MW5-45) were submitted to Cooper Testing Laboratory for
geotechnical testing of permeability, porosity, total organic content, bulk density and moisture by
ASTM Methods D5084 and D2974
Advanced Geo Environmental,Inc
I 1
