Corrective Action Plan
Page 7
Cutter/Western Lift Site
GPE Project No. 102.3
December 12,2003
4.0 SURFACE SYSTEM INSTALLATION & OPERATION
4.1 Equipment Installation
The surface equipment for the remedial system will be installed once the requisite wells have
been constructed. Prior to start-up of the remedial system, an existing electrical service will
be upgraded to provide electricity for the equipment. A small equipment compound will be
constructed to house the blower, compressor, manifolds, and process vapor treatment
equipment. The compound will be located near the point shown on Figure 2. The pipe runs
connecting the sparge and vapor extraction wells to the respective manifolds will, for the most
part, be laid in shallow trenches and buried in order that the operation of the remedial system
will not unduly interfere with the ongoing operations of Cutter Lumber, the occupant of the
site. An existing 240-volt, 3-phase electrical service will be upgraded to handle to power
requirements.
V
4.1.1 Conveyance Piping/Manifold Installation
Conveyance piping connecting the service wells with the surface equipment will be installed
in shallow trenches to protect it from traffic. The existing pavement will be saw cut and
trenches about 12 to 16 inches deep will be dug. The pipe runs will consist of 1.5-inch and 3-
inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC pipe. Trenches will be back filled with cement slurry to
prevent settling and to prevent heavy trucks and equipment from crushing the pipes. Vapor
extraction and air sparge well manifolds will be constructed with valves to allow modification
of airflow and extraction from the various service wells. The vapor extraction manifold will
include a mechanism that will allow sample collection and use of the well for passive air
recharge.
4.1.2 Sparge Compressor Installation
A sparge compressor will be installed in the remedial equipment compound. It will consist of
a 5 HP, electric air compressor with an attached surge tank with at least 60 gallons capacity.
The compressor will be capable of producing 3-5 SCFM of airflow at the face of the screened
interval at the bottom of several sparge wells simultaneously. Thus, the pressure applied at
the wellhead should be approximately 20 pounds per square inch to displace the water in the
blank casing and overcome the natural back-pressure of the formation. The sparge system
will be equipped Rotameter airflow instruments to monitor the rate of sparging in each sparge
well.
4.1.3 Vapor Extraction Blower Installation
The process air will be extracted from the ground using a regenerative blower or ring
compressor capable of producing 150 SCFM and 6 to 8 inches of mercury vacuum. It is
expected that at any given time two to three vapor extraction wells will be operated. This will
allow the wells to be "cycled" to maximize the overall efficiency of the vapor extraction. In
essence, as a given well's gasoline production declines to a low level, it will be taken off-line
and replaced with another well. As the first extractor is allowed to be idle, the gasoline-
2937 Veneman Ave.,#13240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc. Phone(209)569-0293
Modesto,CA 95356 Fax(209)569-0295
