Corrective Action Plan 1./ Page 10
Cutter/Western Lift Site
GPE Project No. 102.3
December 12,2003
5.0 SOIL & GROUNDWATER SAMPLING & ANALYSIS PROCEDURES
5.1 Soil Sample Collection
During drilling, soil samples will be collected for geologic and possible analytical evaluation
on five-foot intervals in each boring unless otherwise noted. The following is a description of
the methods used in collecting soil samples.
In hollow stem auger borings, soil samples will be collected for geological and analytical
evaluation at five-foot intervals using a 2.0-inch diameter by 1.5-foot long (i.d.) hammer
6.0 driven California Split Spoon sampling device fitted with three 2 by 6 inch stainless steel
liners. The soil sample collection procedure will be as follows. The end of each sample tube
removed from the split spoon will be sealed with aluminum foil, capped with plastic end caps,
secured with tape, labeled and placed in a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory
using Chain of Custody protocol. Chain of Custody (CofC) forms are documents used to
track the handling of samples. All dates, times, persons and companies handling the samples
will be listed from the time the sample is collected to its ultimate analysis. All soil sampling
equipment will be decontaminated between uses by washing using a steam cleaner. Nitrile
gloves will be worn during sample collection and changed between the collection of each
sample.
A detailed log will be made of each boring. The information to be noted include such data as
sample depths, blow counts from hammer driven sampling devices, horizons of detectable
contamination (detected by field methods), soil classification utilizing the Unified Soil
Classification System and sediment description (color, texture, composition, hardness,
moisture content, and post-depositional changes that have occurred in the sediments).
5.2 Air Sample Collection
Air samples will be collected at various times during the operation of the remedial system.
Samples will be collected in a Tedlar bag attached with Tygon tubing to a hand-operated air
pump and the appropriate air sampling port. Interim OVM readings will be made in the field
by attaching the instrument to another Tedlar bag filled in the same manner. Closing a nylon
valve on the sample bag will immediately seal samples intended for laboratory analysis, and
the bag will be placed in a cool environment for immediate transport to the analytical
laboratory. A chain of custody document, listing all samples collected and their intended
analyses will accompany the samples from field to the laboratory, thereby providing a means
to track their movement and insure their integrity.
5.3 Soil Sample Analysis
Soil samples will be shipped to a state certified analytical laboratory for analysis. Note that
not all soil samples collected are likely to be submitted for laboratory analysis. Field
2937 Veneman Ave.,#B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
