The
same information will assist in determining the suitability of bioventing as a means
of promoting the growth of aerobic bacteria as a method of metabolizing
hydrocarbons. Several methods for gauging radius of influence are available, and
rwill be used.
' If the results of the pilot test are favorable and the method is selected for
implementation, it is anticipated that simultaneous air recharge and vapor
extraction will be conducted.
' 4.0 GROUNDWATER PUMPING
' Depending on the results of the pilot vapor extraction work, it may be necessary to
conduct a groundwater pumping test. Insofar as it is not known whether
groundwater pumping will be needed, it is discussed below as an option. If this
becomes necessary, an addendum to this Work Plan will be submitted describing
the containment and disposal plans.
' 4.1 Remedial Concept
' In an area of contaminated groundwater, the water contamination can be directly
removed by pumping the water out of suitable well, removing the contamination,
and disposing of the treated water. It also serves to reduce the upward "coning"
' effect that will be caused by a prolonged vapor extraction program.
4.2 Test Procedure
' A submersible pump will be lowered into VEW-Z. It will be used to pump the well
at least three different rates. The water will be produced into a portable tank
' (Baker Tank) and kept on the site until it is profiled. The water levels in the well
will be monitored during the pumping as will the water level in the surrounding
wells. At the end of the pumping period, the rise of water in the well will also be
' monitoring.
' After the results of the pumping test are obtained, the data will be used to calculate
hydraulic transmissivity and other aquifer characteristics to determine if pumping
and treating represents an economically and technically viable final remedial
option.
i
I
