August I,2003 <br /> 2.0 PILOT TEST SYSTEM INSTALLATION <br /> 2.1 Permitting <br /> Permitting for the on-site work included a drilling permit from the San Joaquin County <br /> Environmental Health Department (SJC-EHD) For short term pilot testing, it is not <br /> necessary to obtain a separate air emissions permit from the San Joaquin Valley Unified <br /> Air Pollution Control District (SJVUAPCD), however measures must be taken to assure <br /> that extracted petroleum vapors are not release to the atmosphere <br /> 2.2 Soil Boring Installation <br /> In order to complete the initial 2-well pilot system, a new air sparge well and a new vapor <br /> extraction well were constructed (see Figure 2 for locations) The wells were drilled <br /> using hollow stem auger tools operated by a C-57 licensed drilling contractor During <br /> drilling, the borings were logged and sampled by a professional geologist supervised by a <br />' registered geologist The following paragraphs describe the borings more fully <br /> On February 20, 2003 a CME-85 hollow-stem auger drilling rig, owned and operated by <br /> West Hazmat Drilling Corp , was used to drill two soil borings The vapor extraction <br /> well (VEW-1) was drilled using 15-inch diameter augers to a total depth of 41 feet, while <br /> the sparge well (ASW-1) was drilled using i0-inch diameter soil boring to a total depth of <br /> 45 feet The borings were later converted into wells While drilling, all soil cuttings <br /> were placed in D O T approved, steel 55-gallon drums for temporary storage pending <br /> profiling and proper disposal <br /> 2.3 Aar Sparge Well Construction <br /> This well, ASW-1, is located approximately 15 feet up-gradient from the vapor extraction <br /> well VEW-1 It was drilled using 10-inch diameter augers The following tables <br /> describes the construction of the two <br /> Air Sparge Well Construction (ASW-1) <br /> Casing 2"Schedule 40 PVC <br /> Screen 0 010 Slotted Schedule 40 PVC <br /> Screened Interval 39-44 feet below ground surface (bgs) <br /> Filter Pack 44-36 feet bgs <br /> Filter Pack Material Pea Gravel <br /> Bentonite Transition Seal 36-35 feet bgs <br /> Annular Seal 0-35 feet bgs <br /> The sparge well is screened to expel air slightly below the main contaminant mass near <br /> the top of an impermeable clay located about 42 feet below grade Insofar as the well was <br /> not intended for groundwater sampling, it was not deemed necessary to develop the well <br /> • <br /> 2937 Veneman Ave,413240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc Phone(209) 569-0293 <br /> Modesto, CA 95356 Fax(209) 569-0295 <br />
