Report—Vapor Extraction/Air Sparge Remedial System Page 5
Former Bank of Stockton/Western Lift Site
Project No. 102.3
March 25, 2005
t3.0 SOIL SAMPLING & ANALYSIS
3.1 Soil Sample Collection
While drilling, soil samples were collected for geologic and possible analytical evaluation
on five-foot intervals in each boring unless otherwise noted. The following is a
' description of the methods used in collecting soil samples.
Soil samples were collected for geological and analytical evaluation using a 2.0-inch
L diameter by 1.5-foot Iong (i.d.) hammer driven California Split Spoon sampling device
fitted with three 2 by 6 inch stainless steel liners. The soil sample collection procedure
was as follows: The end of each sample tube removed from the split spoon was sealed
with aluminum foil, capped with plastic end caps, secured with tape, labeled and placed in
a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory using Chain of Custody protocol.
Chain of Custody (CofQ forms are documents used to track the handling of samples. All
' dates, times, persons and companies handling the samples were listed from the time the
sample was collected to its ultimate disposal. All soil sampling equipment was
decontaminated by washing and double rinsing between uses.
' A detailed to was made of each boring and the los are attached to this report as
g g g p
Appendix B. The information noted included such data as sample depths, blow counts
from hammer driven sampling devices, horizons of detectable contamination (detected by
field methods), soil classification utilizing the Unified Soil Classification System and
sediment description (color, texture, composition, hardness, moisture content, and post-
depositional changes that have occurred in the sediments).
' In general, the geologic character of the soil observed during drilling may be characterized
as mixed silt and clay with scattered sand beds. The basal 10 to 15 feet of the interval is
somewhat more sandy than the upper 35 feet. This characterization of the stratigraphy at
the site is a generalized composite from all of the boring logs. For more detail see the
boring logs in Appendix B. Additional boring logs are available in earlier reports.
3.2 Soil Sample Analysis
At least two selected soil samples from each boring were shipped to Sherwood Labs of
Hilmar CA and tested as follows:
' • Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline TPH-Gasoline b EPA method 8015m
Y ( ) Y
• Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Total Xylenes (BTEX) by abbreviated EPA
8020, and
i
The detection limits for those compounds are as follows:
2937 Veneman Ave., #B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
