Work Plan-Pilot Testing Page 9
Cutter Lumber Site
Project No. 102.3
lie October 30,2001
I
5.0 PILOT TESTING SYSTEM INSTALLATION & OPERATION
' 5.1 Pilot System Installation
' The equipment for the pilot system will be installed once the pilot testing wells have been
constructed. The pilot system will include an regenerative blower with a capacity of at
least 125 cfm for the extraction of hydrocarbon containing vapor from the vapor
' extraction well. Two 1,000-1b carbon units will be used to remove the expected volume
of hydrocarbons extracted from the well. It is not expected that the carbon units will need
to be replaced during the course of the pilot test.
5.1.1 Vapor Extraction System Installation
A temporary. 230-volt electrical service will be installed to operate the equipment, or if
available, the existing electrical system will be used to power the blower and other
equipment. A blower with at least 125 cfm capacity, and capable of producing a vacuum
' of 6 to 8 inches of mercury will be used. The blower connected to the vapor extraction
well (VES-1) with a four-inch diameter PVC pipe run. A four to three inch reducer
coupling and three-inch conductor pipe will extend from the well to the blower. A dilute
' air ball valve will be installed along the intake pipe.
' 5.1.2 Sparge Pump Installation
A sparge pump will consist of a 2 horsepower air compressor with attached surge tank.
t The compressor will be capable of producing at least 5 SUM of airflow at the face of the
screened interval at the bottom of the well. Thus, the pressure applied at the wellhead
should be between 8 and 9 pounds per square inch to displace the water in the blank
casing. The pilot air sparge pump will be connected to the well by a 1.5-inch diameter
conveyance pipe. A 1.5-inch ball valve will be used to regulate pressure inside the well.
Power will be supplied from the nearby warehouse building.
' 5.2 Pilot System Operation
Once the pilot system has be installed, the system will be operated for a period of
approximately one week. The following schedule applies to system operation.
' Day 1 Start Vapor Extraction System
Day 3 Start Air Sparge System
Day 1-10 Monitor System
'.
