16 Evaluation of Best Available Technology for Remediation of Hydrocarbon Impacted Soil and Groundwater 2
Manna Pro,4004 EI Dorado Street, Stockton, CA November 22, 1994
2 2 Soil Venting
' Soil vapor extraction was determined to be feasible at this site because of the volatile nature of the
contaminants This method is a proven technology for volatile hydrocarbons and can be very cost
' effective In addition, the induced air flow improves the natural biodegradation occurring around the
impacted area The method is typically a fast solution for reducing concentration of volatile organics
in soil, however, the site clay layers may impede the effective operation of soil venting Since this
' technology does not address the groundwater issues, soil vapor extraction alone was not chosen as
the technology of choice for the Manna Pro facility A combined groundwater extraction/soil vapor
' extraction test was performed at the site
23 Groundwater Extraction and Treatment
' This technology was pilot tested at the site and deemed feasible The aquifer testing indicates a
groundwater capture zone can be effectively implemented to address the extent of the plume This
method is a proven technology and can be cost effective, but often takes a considerable amount of
time to remediate a site This technology is often used in combination with other technologies
Groundwater extraction is also often used with other technologies as a groundwater control
measure The downside of this method is the low achievable flow rate at the site Groundwater
extraction would be a possible remediation tool at this site, but is most effective when combined
with one or more additional technologies for maximum effect
24 Groundwater Spargmg
' This technology is not feasible at this site due to the clay layering around the impacted groundwater
zones In addition, there is a thick clay layer at the surface of the property Also, sparging can
cause some groundwater movement which can cause the migration of the contaminants away from
the property Expensive control technology and pilot testing would be required to ensure that
' groundwater movement was minimized Also, vapors from the sparging activities can potentially
migrate away from the property which would require expensive control technology and pilot testing
' 25 High Vacuum Dual Phase Extraction (HVDPE)
This technology is field proven, addresses both the vadose and saturated zones, provides an
' excellent remediation time frame, and it is cost effective HVDPE can extract groundwater and soil
vapors from the subsurface at optimal rates This technology was pilot tested at the subject
property Based on the pilot results, this technology can be effective for the Manna Pro site, but
should be used in combination with other technologies This method can cause problems during
' oossRola 2a2
GROUNDWATER
EEITECHNOLOGY,INC
