Mr Michael Infurna Project 0805-114 02
January 29, 1996
Page 3
stockpiled soil is based on the concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in the
excavated soil
Soil Vapor Extraction
Based on the results of the site assessment and the operation of the soil vapor extraction
(S VE) system, S VE of gasoline hydrocarbons in soil is feasible This alternative required
the installation of subgrade piping and installation and operation of a vapor extraction and
abatement system This method is less disruptive to business operations and is more cost-
effective than excavation The S VE system is currently extracting and treating
hydrocarbon-laden vapors as designed
GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION
Groundwater remediation is the removal and/or treatment of groundwater impacted by
petroleum hydrocarbons This section discusses alternatives for remediating the
groundwater at the site
Groundwater Extraction and Treatment
Based on analytical data collected from groundwater to date, dissolved gasoline hydrocarbons
quantified as gasoline are present in on-site and off-site wells Implementation of this alternative
may require the installation of one or more recovery wells This option will also require the
designing, permitting, and installation of an aboveground groundwater treatment system Based
on existing concentrations of dissolved hydrocarbons in groundwater and the excessive amount
of water that will be produced to maintain an effective capture zone, EMCON believes this
alternative method is not cost-effective to remediate groundwater In addition, based on
inforrriation gathered at similar sites with operating groundwater extraction test systems, the
remediation process is very slow and target cleanup levels are typically unobtainable
Air Sparging
Air sparging is used as an alternative to conventional groundwater pump and treat and
aboveground treatment. Air sparging is used to provide in-situ air-stripping to physically
remove dissolved hydrocarbons and increase microbial degradation of dissolved
hydrocarbons
SAC\N\PJM80M8051140 2ES-95\pa+ 1
