Our work plan includes two phases: the investigation of the drain inlets for the presence of
soil contaminated with oils and petroleum fuels (i.e.,. gasoline and diesel) and the remediation of
contaminated soil (as warranted) followed by the cleaning of the drain lines. Our work plan
includes a discussion of the background of the project, the general approach that will be undertaken
for the investigation and remediation activities, and a schedule for implementing the work plan.
BACKGROUND
It is our understanding that during the repair of a storm drain inlet by a District maintenance
worker, a black, odorous material was discovered in and around one of the drain inlets near the
Lube Shop. A water layer was noted 4 to 6 inches above this contaminated material which
appeared stained and exhibited petroleum odors. The District requested Helmick & Lerner Inc. to
collect a sample of the stained material for laboratory analysis in order to characterize chemical
constituents that may be present.
The sample was collected by hand-driving a steel corer containing a 2-inch diameter brass liner into
the soil beneath the water collected at the bottom of the drain. The sample was delivered with a
chain-of-custody form to Excelchem Environmental Labs of Roseville, a State-Certified
Laboratory, for analysis of the following constituents:
