3 .5 Water Sample Collection and Analysis
On August 16, 1993 , a water sample was collected from the domestic
well located on the site. The sample was collected in 40 ml EPA
vials, and stored on ice pending transmission to Mccampbell
Analytical in Pacheco. The sample was analyzed for TPH as gasoline,
BTE&X and EDB in accordance with EPA methods 8015m, 602 and AB
1803 , respectively.
4.0 FINDINGS
4. 1 stratigraphy
The boring penetrated predominately brown to gray silty clay to
silty sand. Strong hydrocarbon odors were observed in soil samples
from borings B1, B2 and B3 . Volatile organic vapors were detected
at concentrations of up to 1446 parts per million (ppm) by the PID.
Moderate hydrocarbon odors were observed in boring B6, and volatile
organic vapors were detected at a level of 304 ppm by the PID. Only
slight hydrocarbon odors were noted in._ boring B4, and no
hydrocarbon odors were observed in boring B5.
4 .2 Laboratory Results of Soil Samples
Hydrocarbon contamination was detected in nine of the ten soil
samples analyzed. No contamination was detected at a depth of 30
feet in boring B4 (B4-30) . TPH as gasoline was detected in boring
B1 at depths of 15, 20 and 25 feet at levels of 9, 600 ppm, 12, 000
ppm and 44 ppm, respectively. In boring B2, TPH was detected at 200
ppm, 1, 300 ppm and 200 ppm, at depths of 15, 20 and 25 feet,
respectively. Gasoline was detected in boring B3 at a depth of 25
feet (180 ppm) and in boring B4 at a depth of 20 feet (1. 6 ppm) . No
gasoline was detected in sample B3-30.
Volatile aromatic compounds (BTE&X) were also .detected in nine of
the ten soil samples at levels as great as 1, 000 ppm (xylenes, B1-
20) . The analytical results are summarized in Tables 1. The
laboratory report and chain of custody are attached in Appendix A.
4.3 Laboratory Results of Water Samples
No contaminants were detected in the water sample collected from
the domestic well (Appendix A) . Since groundwater depth is
estimated at 80 to 90 feet, and field screening did not indicate
the presence of volatile organic vapors at depths of greater than
30 feet, it is unlikely that groundwater has been impacted.
Therefore, a groundwater monitoring well was not required by the
PHS/EHD.
3
