5.0 CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
In the area where borings were drilled, the site is underlain by
relatively fine-grained, low-permeability silt and clay in the
upper 30 feet. A few thin layers of fine-grained sand are
interbedded.
A strong hydrocarbon odor was detected in borings B1 through B3 to
depths of 25 feet during drilling. A slight hydrocarbon odor was
detected at depths of 30 feet, and no hydrocarbon odor was detected
at 35 feet. A slight hydrocarbon odor was detected in boring B4 at
depths of 20 and 25 feet.
The laboratory analysis indicates that contamination at the site is
greatest at depths between 15 and 25 feet. Only slight hydrocarbon
contamination is present at depths greater than 25 feet.
Since the water sample from the domestic well did not indicate the
presence of any contaminants, and no soil contamination was
encountered at a depth of 30 feet, it appears that groundwater has
not been impacted. Therefore, a groundwater investigation is not
warranted at this time.
It is our understanding that the PHS/EHD will perform a leaching
potential analysis of the site to assess the potential impact to
groundwater of the contaminated soil. If the analysis indicates the
soil contamination may pose a threat to groundwater, we recommend
that an excavator be utilized to remove the contaminated soil at
the site. The volume of impacted soil is probably about 600 cubic
yards. If the analysis indicates the soil contamination is not a
potential threat to groundwater, then removal or remediation of the
soil may not be necessary.
6.0 LIMITATIONS
Our professional services were performed using that degree of care
and skill ordinarily exercised by environmental consultants
practicing in this or similar localities.
