Elm Street, Lodi, California
Dear Mr. Wong:
This letter report is submitted on behalf of the City of Lodi to summarize the results of soil
excavation and groundwater sampling activities conducted March 31 and April 7, 2005 at the above
referenced site. The excavation was performed to remove soil impacted with methyl tertiary butyl
ether(MTBE) in accordance with the workplan prepared by Jim Thorpe Oil, Inc., and groundwater
sampling was conducted to confirm that groundwater beneath the site has not been impacted by
petroleum hydrocarbon constituents. The site location is shown on Figure 1.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Underground Storage Tank Removal
On February 17, 2005, Jim Thorpe Oil, Inc. removed one 12,000-gallon unleaded gasoline fuel
storage tank (UST) and one 2,000-gallon diesel fuel UST from the rear parking lot of 230 W.
Elm Street, Lodi, California. The USTs were removed under the supervision of Mr. Dennis
Catanyag of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD). Soil samples
were collected by GeoAnalytical Laboratories of Modesto, California under the direction of Mr.
Catanyag. One soil sample collected from beneath the north end of the gasoline UST contained
MTBE at 18,800 µg/kg (18.8 parts per million [ppm]) and total petroleum hydrocarbons as
gasoline (TPHg) at 4,000 µg/kg (4.0 ppm). Due to the elevated level of MTBE in that soil
sample, EHD requested additional investigation of the extent of MTBE in soil beneath the north
end of the UST. Analytical results are summarized in Table 1. Field notes showing the locations
of tank removal samples are included in Attachment A.
Hydrogeological Setting
The site is located in central Lodi approximately 0.9 miles south of the Mokelumne River.
