I
U
system) , after repeated or prolonged exposures at high
concentrations . j, It has also caused fetal defects in
tests on laboratory animals .
Lifetime studies' by the American Petroleum Institute have
L shown that kidney damage and kidney cancer can occur in
male rats after ' prolonged inhalation exposures at
f elevated concentrations of total gasoline . Kidneys of
mice and female rats were unaffected. Certain
components, such as normal hexane, may also affect the
nervous system :,at high concentrations . Typically, n-
hexane represents: 1 to 3% of gasoline . Gasoline may
contain a combined concentration of toluene, and xylene,
ranging from approximately 5 to 50% . The lead content
Cmay vary in compliance with EPA and state regulations.
The chemicals shown in Table 1 , are known or suspected to
be present on site, are common constituents of gasoline,
and. diesel . The are colorless liquids with strong
aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon-like odors . They are
flammable, are moderately volatile, their vapors are
ri heavier than air and they have low solubility in water.
Exposure to these chemicals in excess of published
exposure limits can cause damage to the central nervous
system, skin, , respiratory system, blood, liver,
gastrointestinala) tract and eyes .
6 . 0.
