i 1
Alarms : 100 ppm
1000 ppm C
10% LEL
19 . 5 02 (Decreasing)
15 . 0 MONITORING EOUI`PMENT - CALIBRATION
A. Calibration of the Tank-Techtor should be checked IIII
periodically to assure proper response. Frequency
of calibration depends on frequency and type of use
1.t1 the instrument receives . As standard procedure,
Lt instrument will be calibrated by an authorized
service representative every six months . If more
frequent calibration is required, trained personnel
C will perform calibration on premises, in accordance J
with manufacturers specifications .
Hexane is , the recommeded calibration gas for the
hydrocarbon ranges , since it provides a
conservative response representative of total
petroleum :hydrocarbon vapors present . Normal fresh
C air is used to calibrate the oxygen range.
I
C. Most hydrocarbon gases or vapors will cause a
response on the instrument meter, but may not be
direct reading . A hexane calibration provides a
conservative reading representative of total
petroleum hydrocarbon vapors present .
1 D. Soil contamination by hydrocarbon liquids can be
r tested by 'measuring the head space in a closed
L container half-full of soil . This test with any
portable gas sensing instrument should be used only
as a field indication of whether or not the soil is
C contaminated, and a soil sample should be sent to a j
laboratory for a more accurate determination of the
contamination level .
rE. . The standard Tank-Techtor has no response to
methane, the major constituent in natural gas .
This IiIis generally a desired feature for checking C, soils and vapors to avoid confusing readings if
I near a landfill or other methane source. In the
non-methane responding mode, the instrument
response to methane is completely eliminated, and
response to a few other gases or vapors is also
reduced or eliminated . In this mode the instrument
L still responds well to petroleum vapors such BTEX
Lr compounds.
10
