r
c
F. The calibration gas is hexane . The percentage by
weight of I'hexane in gasoline is about 3% . The
percentage . by weight of benzene in gasoline is
J about 4 . 90 : The lower explosive limit (LEL) for
L both gases are close to 1% . These two
L characteristics show that hexane calibrated
equipment measuring total pertroleum hydrocarbons
(gasoline) •would provide a good estimate of benzene
levels .
G. Should flammable vapors at or above 10% of the
Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) be detected, work will
stop and precautions will be taken to eliminate all
potential sources of ignition from the area . (For
example ; smoking materials ; non-explosion proof
electrical and internal combustion equipment; all
extension cords must be explosion proof) I
Engineering controls capable of reducing the III
flammable vapors to levels at or below l0% of the
Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) before proceeding with
any further work.
I
H. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) contaminated soil
is a soil .: which registers 50 ppmv or more when
measured with an organic vapor analyzer (calibrated
using hexane) at a distance of no more than three
inches above exposed soil .
17 . 0 OTHER SAFETY HAZARDS
A. Work areaswill be barricaded to protect both the
L' public and. workers . Work areas shall be kept clear
L of stockpiled materials .
Ct B. Soil shall be sprayed with water during loading
i operations" to prevent emissions of particulates .
D. Any soils ,that must be barreled on-site must have
chemical analysis classification completed .
Drummed soils will not be transported off-site
without proper classifications .
L E. The jobsite shall be inspected daily, prior to
beginning work, and any existing damages to public
propertyy not deemed the fault of, nor from the
t operations of, the Company , shall be reported to
the Client Contact , . and shall be noted on the Daily
L
Log .
