Although total vapor/gas concentration (ppm) measurements are
useful for the selection of protective equipment, caution
should be exercised in interpretation. An instrument does not
r.. respond with the same sensitivity to several vapor/gas
contaminants as it does to a single contaminant. Also, since
• total vapor/gas field instruments "see" all contaminants in
relation to a specific calibration gas, the concentration of
unknown gases or vapors may be over or under-estimated.
V
Suspected carcinogens , particulates , highly hazardous
substances, infectious wastes , or other substances that do not
elicit an instrument response may be known or suspected to be
present. Therefore, the protection level should not be based
solely on the total vapor/gas criterion . Rather, the level
should be selected, case-by-case, with special emphasis on
potential exposure from the chemical and toxicological
characteristics of the known or suspected material .
Vapors/gases with a very low Threshold Limit Value (TLV) or
Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) value could be
present. Total readings on instruments, not calibrated to .
these substances , may not indicate unsafe conditions.
V
GASOLINE PRODUCTS :
Gasoline consists mainly of straight chain and branched paraffinic
` hydrocarbons, olefins, cycloparaffins and aromatics . The benzene
content normally varies from 0 . 2-3 . 5% with a typical value of 1 . 4% .
Effects of Overexposure:
ACUTE:
V
o EYES : May cause irritation, experienced as mild discomfort and
seen as slight excess redness of the eye . First Aid Measures:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes . Hold eyelids apart while flushing to rinse surface
of eye and lids with water. Get medical attention.
Protective Equipment: Chemical-type goggles or face shield
'- recommended to prevent eye contact .
o SKIN: Prolonged or widespread skin contact may result in the
v absorption of potentially harmful amounts of material . First
Aid Measures: Wash skin with plenty of soap and water until
all traces of material are removed . Remove and clean
contaminated clothing . Destroy non-resistant footwear. Get
` medical attention if skin irritation persists or contact has
been prolonged. Because of its irritating properties,
repeated skin contact may aggravate an existing dermatitis
(skin condition) . Protective Equipment : Protective clothing
such as uniforms , coveralls or lab coats should be worn.
Launder or dry-clean when soiled. Gloves and boots resistant
to chemicals and petroleum distillates required.
3
V
V
