Box 1219
Lathrop, CA 95330
INSPECTION REPORT, CALIFORNIA NATURAL PRODUCTS, LATHROP, SAN JOAQUIN
COUNTY
Enclosed is a report summarizing my 26 April 2000 inspection of the California Natural Products (CNP)
wastewater treatment and disposal facilities. In general, the wastewater treatment system was clean and
well maintained; however the presence of odors at the land application area is a concern. A site
inspection photograph log is enclosed with this letter.
The inspection was prompted by odor complaints received by the Board from nearby residents. When
the complaints were received on 29 March 2000, staff immediately contacted CNP. On 30 March 2000,
Mr. Lynn Forcum of CNP informed me that CNP was aware of the odor problem and was installing a
dissolved air floatation(DAF) unit to remove solids from the wastewater. The DAF was expected to
greatly reduce odor generation. Mr. Forcuun estimated the DAF would be operational by approximately
15 April 2000. During the 26 April 2000 inspection, the DAF was installed but not plumbed. CNP
shall include an operational status report on the DAF in monitoring reports until the equipment is
operating.
The following observations were noted during the inspection:
• All process wastewater is discharged to the treatment system or is trucked to the City of
Lathrop's wastewater treatment facility. Treatment consists of neutralization, screening,
biological treatment in a trickling filter, separation of solids using a polymer, and land
application. The DAF is being added to the treatment system and will be placed to treat
wastewater prior to the trickling filter. The DAF is expected to be operational by approximately
8 May 2000.
• Treated wastewater is discharged to a 30-acre land application area which acts as a rapid
infiltration basin. Accumulated solids were observed in some areas of the infiltration basin.
Limited ponding of wastewater was observed.
• The wastewater treatment area was clean and well maintained. Workers were making
mechanical and electrical connections to new equipment. In the wastewater treatment area, mild
odors were noted. The odors were limited to the area of the treatment equipment and therefore
were acceptable.
California Environmental Protection A1;encu
0 Recycled Paper
