w
• Estimates of the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils will be made using a hand-held pocket
penetrometer and/or a torvane shear device, as appropriate. The borings will be logged by a field
engineer or geologist who will package samples and transport them to the laboratory for further
evaluation and testing.
• Upon completion of drilling, the excavations will be backfilled with neat cement grout per PG&E
practice. Drill cuttings and fluids will be contained in DOT-approved, 55-gallon steel drums and staged
onsite. Samples will be obtained for analytical testing, as described below.
Task: Drum Testing and Disposal
Excess drill cuttings and fluids will be contained in steel drums, and a sample will be obtained for
analytical testing. The anticipated analytical testing includes a suite comprised of one of each of the
following tests, unless otherwise noted:
• pH
• TPH Diesel/Motor Oil/Gasoline/BTEX (EPA Method 8015M or equivalent)
• CAM 17 metals (EPA Method 6020A, 7471B or equivalent)
PG&E will be responsible for providing a secure staging facility for drums. This location must be
determined prior to mobilization for the field investigation. If the staging facility is located greater than
30 minutes from the jobsite, additional fees for transport of the drums will apply.
The analytical results will be delivered to the PG&E Environmental Field Specialist for determination of
hazardous/nonhazardous status. Once confirmed to be non-hazardous, drill cuttings and fluids will be
off hauled by our subcontractor. If determined to be Hazardous, PG&E will be responsible for disposing
of the spoils.
Task: Geotechnical Laboratory Testing
Laboratory tests will be performed on selected samples retrieved from the exploratory boring to
evaluate the physical and engineering properties of the materials encountered.Tests may include the
following:
• Grain-size analyses and Hydrometer(ASTM D422)
