21 August 2003 <br />AGE -NC Project No 03-1055 <br />Page 7 of 10 <br />3 1 1 Excavation Soil Sampling <br />Soil samples collected from the base and sidewalls of the excavation will be obtained using a <br />backhoe or excavator Soil samples will be collected from the bucket of the excavating equipment <br />by pressing a 3-mch long by 2 -inch diameter brass sleeve into the excavated soil material The <br />exposed ends of the sample sleeve will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape <br />Soil samples will be collected from soil stockpiles by digging approximately one foot into the soil <br />stockpile Soil samples will be collected by hand sampling methods using a stainless steel or carbon <br />steel trowel, or by pressing a brass sampling sleeve into the soil stockpile <br />Following sample collection, each sample sleeve will be properly preserved as described above and <br />will be labeled with the boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials Appropriately sealed <br />and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of- <br />custody <br />hain-ofcustody procedure to a DHS -certified laboratory <br />• 3 2 MONITORING WELL ABANDONMENT <br />• <br />Monitoring wells MW -1, MW -3 and MW -4 (Figure 3) will be abandoned utilizing a truck -mounted <br />drill rig equipped with 8 -inch hollow stem augers The well will be over-drilled from surface grade <br />to total depth of the well The boring will be backfilled to surface grade using Type LU portland neat <br />cement and not more than 6 gallons of water per 94 -pound sack of cement <br />3 3 SOIL BORING/REPLACEMENT MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION <br />To install replacement wells MW -6 and. MW -7, pilot borings will be advanced utilizing a truck- <br />mounted drill ng equipped with 8 25 -inch hollow stem auger The locations of the wells are <br />illustrated in Figure 3 <br />3 3 1 Drilling and Soil Sampling Procedures <br />The soil borings will be advanced utilizing a truck -mounted drill rig equipped with 8 -inch diameter <br />hollow -stem augers The hollow -stem auger drilling method is performed without the introduction <br />of drilling fluids and allows for the collection of relatively undisturbed soil samples During soil <br />sampling and well installation, the augers remain in the ground, thus providing stability to the <br />borehole <br />Advanced GeoEnvironmcntal, Inc <br />
