1
' 29 January 2001
. AGE-NC Project No 00-0725
' 3 5 BACKFILLING OF EXCAVATION AND DISPOSAL OF HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED
SOIL
The excavation was backfilled and compacted with approximately 60 cubic yards of pea gravel to
the upper portion of the water table and clean fill sand was then roll compacted with a sheep's foot
wheel into the excavation to the surface grade
On 09 November 2000, approximately 236 5 metric tons of excavated soil was transported from the
site and disposed at Forward Landfill The manifests with weight master certificates etc are attached
' in Appendix A
' 3 6 DRILLING AND SAMPLING
In 29 November 2000, five soil borings were advanced at the site Each soil borings was advanced
' using a CME-75 drill ng, equipped with 8 25-inch diameter hollow-stem augers The drill rig and
two-man crew were supplied by West Hazmat Drilling Auger returns generated by drilling were
' stockpiled on site, pending laboratory analysis
Soil samples were collected ahead of the drill bit using a California modified split-spoon sampler
' loaded with three pre-cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves The samples were collected from
monitoring well pilot bonngs MW1 through MW5 at five-foot intervals, beginning at 5 feet bsg
using a 140-pound hammer to advance the sampler The number of blows required to advance the
' sampler over each 6-inch increment of the 18-inch sampling interval was recorded on the boring
logs Sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed with water prior to each
sampling run to minimize cross-contamination of the samples
lBoth ends of the leading or other selected sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed
with tape The samples were labeled, stored on ice and transported under chain-of-custody to
' McCambell Analytical, Inc (MAI) in Pacheco, California, DHS-certified analytical laboratory
I37 LOGGING
Soil was extruded from a second brass sleeve or from the unpreserved portions of the soil in the core
barrel samples and was screened for the presence of organic vapor using an organic vapor meter
(OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 0 eV,
calibrated to isobutylene), and the OVM readings were recorded on the boring log The soil was then
visually described in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (see Appendix B)
IAdvanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc
