Shell Oil Company <br /> April 19, 1995 (9447-8613) <br /> 3 0 RESULTS <br />' 3.1 Soli Conditions <br />' During excavation of the tank basin, soils encountered from surface to the maximum depth <br /> of approximately 19 feet bgs were mostly native clayey silts A sand backfill layer existed at <br /> approximately 12 to 15 feet bgs below the tanks Groundwater was not observed within the <br /> excavation <br /> Soils exposed beneath the former product piping were primarily silts with some clay <br />' Excavation depth beneath the dispenser islands and product lines was approximately 4 5 to 6 5 <br /> feet bgs <br />' Following the removal of the USTs and additional excavation, and the installation of the <br /> new containment system, the tank pit and product line excavations were backfilled with clean pea <br /> gravel <br />' 3.2 Soil Sampling and Analysis <br /> On December 7, 1994, Fugro observed the removal of four USTs by Golden West of <br /> Livermore, California The USTs were triple-rinsed and prepared for removal by Allwaste of <br /> Benicia, California The ansate water was transported by Allwaste to Romic Environmental in <br />' Palo Alto, California The USTs were transported by Erikson, Inc to their facility in Richmond, <br /> California Copies of the UST and rinsate uniform hazardous waste manifests are included as <br /> Appendix D <br />' All soil sampling was conducted under the direction of Mr Steve Sasson and Mr Jerry <br /> Yoshioka of the SJCDEH Following removal of the four USTs, Fugro personnel collected a <br /> total of ten soil samples from beneath the former UST locations and eight soil samples from <br /> beneath the removed product lines and dispenser area (Figure 2 and Table 1) Based on <br /> analytical data from these samples, Fugro personnel directed over-excavation activities and <br /> collected two additional tank pit samples and four sidewall samples on December 12, 1994 On <br /> December 13, 1994, after further over-excavation, Fugro personnel collected five more samples <br /> from the former dispenser area and three more samples from the UST excavation (Figure 3 and <br /> Table 2) The samples were collected in accordance with SJCDEH requirements and the SOPS <br /> included in Appendix A Soil samples collected from the excavations were delivered under <br /> chain-of-custody to Sequoia Analytical of Sacramento, California, a state-certified analytical <br /> laboratory The samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline, <br /> by Modified EPA Method 8015, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX), by <br /> EPA Method 8020, and Total Lead <br /> Analytical results are summarized In Tables I and 2 The laboratory reports and chain-of- <br /> custody forms are Included in Appendix B Unauthorized release forms are included as <br /> Appendix F <br /> 94478613 ACR - - 3 <br />
