D. Topography
The Stockton Metropolitan Airport is located in the northern portion of the San Joaquin
Valley. The land is essentially flat and slopes from east to west approximately five feet
in two miles. There is a series of creeks and sloughs that traverse the.area and connect
into the San Joaquin River west and north of the airport. The San Joaquin River joins the
Sacramento River and flows through the Carquinez Straights into San Francisco Bay.
Webers Slough flows through the airport. This slough starts about six miles east of the
airport and drains a small local area. All other creeks and sloughs are located outside of
F. airport property.
` E. Geology
Stockton Metropolitan Airport is located in the northern portion of the San Joaquin
Valley. The San Joaquin Valley and the Sacramento Valley to the north originally were
an arm of the Pacific Ocean and were fed by steams from the Sierra-Nevada Mountains
to the east and the Coastal Range to the west. The lower sediments in this area are
marine deposits. The upper portion of soils in this area are fresh-water sedimentary
deposits from the Sierra-Nevada Mountains. These materials were deposited in periods
f
of heavy precipitation. As a result, the deposits near the mountains are coarser than those
+ further to the west.. In the vicinity of the airport the soils range from sands to silts to
clays deposited in various layers throughout the site. The surface soils throughout the
area are black medium to highly plastic clays.
F. Aviation Facilities
E Principal activities at the airport consist of general aviation operations, Army National
Guard Operations, Air Force flight training operations, and air cargo operations. Facilities
for airline operations are available and were previously used at the airport. Currently
there are no airline operations at the airport. The general aviation operations consist of .
charter flights, private business and pleasure flights, and pilot training.
There are five fixed base operators on the airport that provide fuel, aircraft maintenance,
aircraft sales, charter flights, and pilot training.
The California Army National Guard is a permanent aviation facility designed to support
National Guard aviation units in Central California. The facility presently supports rotary
rwing aircraft and a_few fixed wing aircraft.
The air cargo facility consists of the Farmington Fresh operations and small aircraft
support for the major package carriers such as Federal Express and United Parcel Service.
i , F The Farmington Fresh facility is a fresh produce sorting, packing, and shipping facility
which ships fresh produce all over the world with large cargo-type aircraft of the B747,
f DC-10 and DC-8 class.
3-2
