196-Manteca lnie sand I®arm, 0 to 2 percent slopes. <br /> This moderatelywell <br /> drained, nearly level soil is on low terraces. it is moderately <br /> III hardpan. It formed in alluvium derived from mixed rock sources. Elevation is 20 t 1 10 feet. The <br /> j average annual precipitation is about 11 inches, the average annual air temperature is ab <br /> degrees F, and the average frost-free period is about 270 days. out 60 <br /> r <br /> Typically, the surface layer is grayish brown fine sandy loam about 11 inches thick. The upper-part <br /> of the subsoil is grayish brown and light brownish gray fine sandy loam about 13 inches thick. The <br /> next part is a light grey, indurated hardpan, which extends to a depth of 35 inches. The lower part <br /> is a light gray, weakly cemented to strongly cemented hardpan, which extends <br /> ' th of 54 <br /> inches. The underlying material to a depth of 74 inches is variegated light gaytnd white sand <br /> loam. In some areas the surface layer is loam or clay loam. y <br /> Included in this unit are small areas of Tinnin and Veritas soils on the slightly higher parts of the <br /> landscape, small areas of Guard and Trahern soils on the slightly lower parts, and a few areas <br /> ( where depth to the hardpan is as little as 10 inches, mainly where deep leveling cuts have been <br /> made. Also included .are some areas of soils that have been subsoiled or deeply ripped and have <br /> �^ fragments of cemented material on the surface and throughout the profile. Included areas make <br /> s up about 15 percent of the total acreage. <br /> I <br /> Permeability is moderate in the Manteca soil. Available water capacity is low. The effective rooting j <br /> depth is limited by the hardpan at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. Depth to the water table is more than <br /> 6 feet, but water may be perched above the hardpan after periods of heavy rainfall or irrigation. <br /> Runoff is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is slight. The rate of water intake in irrigated areas <br /> is 1.5 inches per hour. The hazard of soil blowing is moderate. The soil is subject to rare flooding, N <br /> which occurs during years of abnormally high precipitation. <br /> j <br /> Most areas are used for irrigated crops or vineyards. A few areas are used as irrigated pasture or. i <br /> for homesite development. This unit may provide wetland functions and values. These should be <br /> considered in plans for enhancement of wildlife habitat or land use conversion. <br /> This unit is suited to irrigated row, field, and vineyard crops. The main limitations are depth to the <br /> hardpan and the low available water capacity. General management considerations include the <br /> hazard of soil blowing. The hardpan limits the suitability for deep-rooted crops. Where feasible, <br /> deep ripping of this restrictive layer can help to overcome this limitation. <br /> Because the soil is droughty, applications of irrigation water should be light and frequent; Careful <br /> applications are needed to prevent the buildup of a high water table. Furrow, border, and sprinkler <br /> G <br /> irrigation systems are suitable. A tillage pan forms easily if the soil is tilled when wet. Chiseling or <br /> subsoiling breaks up the pan. When the wind.velocity is high in spring, the hazard of soil blowing <br /> can be reduced by properly managing all crop residue and by minimizing tillage. <br /> u <br /> This unit is suited to irrigated-pasture. irrigation water can be applied by sprinkler and border <br /> methods. Leveling helps to ensure a uniform application of water.
