y
f. yK
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The proposed Interstate 5/Bird Road Interchange and Road Specific Plan, as shown on the attached figure, is
consistent with both the approved San Joaquin County General Plan Amendment and the Caltrans Project Study
Report (PSR). Therefore, the proposed interchange; roadway alignments, and right of way requirements
contained within the Interstate 5/Bird Road Interchange and Road Specific Plan have been determined after
an in-depth study and evaluation of the various alternatives. A brief description of the planned interchange
and roadway extension design is included in the foIIowing paragraphs. The interim and ultimate designs are
presented in Figures 2 and 3. The proposed plan line and required right-of-way requirements for these designs
are detailed in the accompanying plan set.
The planned new Interstate 5/13ird Road Interchange consists of a modified par-'clo design, including only a
single eastbound to northbound loop on-ramp rather than two internal loop on-ramps. The new interchange '.
will be approximately 1500 meters north of the Interstate 5$0/Interstate 5 separation and just south of a
California Aqueduct crossing of Interstate 5. The new Bird Road extension will be constructed to intersect
with the interchange in order to provide local access to the new interchange. The interchange extends from
just south of Hospital Creek north to the California Aqueduct. New bridges will be required at the northbound
off-ramp and southbound on-ramp over Hospital Creek and for the county road over the Interstate.
The new Bird Road extension will realign the existing Bird Road just north of the existing high pressure gas
pipelines, traverse southeasterly across and create an interchange with Interstate 5 and then continue to Gaffery
Road in Stanislaus County. In addition to the bridge crossing of Interstate 5, the new extension will also
require improvements to both crossings of the California Aqueduct in San Joaquin County and Delta Mendota
Canal within Stanislaus County as well as require crossing of an existing watercourse, floodplain and floodway
associated with Hospital Creek. Box culverts will be used in crossing this area. The extension in its entirety
will be approximately 3.3 miles in length.
The remaining existing Bird Road south of the new Bird Road extension will be realigned to "T" into the new
county road and will require a new crossing of the existing pipelines. On the southeasterly end, the Bird Road
extension will be aligned to flow into the existing Gaffery Road to the east across both the California Aqueduct
and Delta Mendota Canal. At the juncture with Gaffery Road, the westerly alignment of the existing Gaffery
Road will also require realignment to "T" into the newly realigned Bird Road extension.
Included in this Interstate 5/Bird Road Interchange and Road Specific Plan project will be the rehabilitation
of Gaffery Road from the intersection with the existing Gaffery Road to the SanJoaquin County line
Rehabilitation of this segment of roadway will include replacement of the approach guardrails at the Gaffery !
Road bridge over the California Aqueduct
M
Project Description Page 4
Interstate 51Bird Road Interchange and Road Specific Plan
M
