covers to protect the board coating from rain. The problem for
smoked track boards which rain causes was actually off-set by the
great number of ad hoc " "mud track 'boards" which it created
throughout the site. All tracks were identified with the aid of
Murie, 1975, and Taylor & Raphal, 1987,
Photo verification of track board visitors was obtained at
selected stations by installing an automatic advancing 35mm flash
camera which was triggered every time the chicken leg bait was
lightly pulled. Because of the daily presence of farm workers
in the orchards and cattle "in the dry pasture area, camera set-
ups .were used only at secluded sites outside of these areas.
Den Search
Prior to the initiation of the bait/track station work 50, foot
interval transects were walked across and around the site in
order to detect all burrows and other passages (rock crevices,
drain pipes, etc..) which could serve as either an emergency
retreat or den site for the SJKF. To insure that the minimal
measurement requirements were met for such potential retreats
(4 inch diameter burrow opening and a 4 inch or greater shaft
t., diameter for the first 2 feet) , a measuring device was employed.
It consists of an octagonal PVC pipe fitting, the paired opposing
points of which are exactly 4 inches apart. The fitting Js
f screwed into a 30 inch length of flexible one inch diameter
conduit pipe which can be conformed to the initial two feet of a
burrow's contour. '
y Nightop tli t M
Dusk through darkness spotlight surveys were conducted for ten
non-consecutive nights during both survey periods. Coleman Model
5360-718 halogen 750,000 candle power spotlights deployed out of
each side of 'a 3/4 ton pick--up truck cab plus the the vehicle's
high beam headlights were used to detect animals . Distant
observations were made with the aid of, 10X50 binoculars. A
series of orchard and quarry service roads were used to crass
through portions of the acreage east of I-580 several times
during each there hour night drive session. A dirt road which
runs from the western tip of the project site segment west of I-
580 to the edge of the Caltrans/gas pipe right-of-way was also
driven twice, each night. In addition to surveying the site
proper, a series of county roads, canal roads, and short . farm
, roads east of I-580 were also driven as indicated in Figure 13.
Failure to receive permission to enter off-site property west of
I-580 where there are no public roads negated surveying beyond
the project site boundary in that area.
Swainponfa hawk m& other Avian And Bat Special Statuse.cieg
on each daily site visit to check track boards during the last
two weeks in August, the entire area was visually searched with
the aid of 10X50 binoculars for specimens of the Swainson's hawk;
peregrine. falcon, prairie falcon, burrowing owl, Cooper's hawk,
northern harrier, and tricolored blackbird. Special attention in
this search was paid . to the heavily _ grazed dry grassland area
Ei 6
