San Joaggin Kit Fox
min
E "
Part one of this two part survey protocol was conducted between
August 15 and 31, 1995. The second phase took place between
November 25 and December 10, 1995.
Bait rack atatis-ns
Eight smoked aluminum track plates (Barrett, 1983 ) were
positioned on the project site at locations which appeared
attractive to mammalian predators that may wander through the
property. These were sites which offered either good retreat
possibilities (debris piles) adjacent to areas of California
ground squirrel activity (Figures 5 & 6) , constricted potential
-.
travel corridors such as the I-580 and I--S Hospital Creek
overpasses (Figures 11 & 12 ) , and the permanent water
impoundments (Figures 7 & 8) . The latter were chosen because .
although the SJKF has the ability to exist for periods of time on
just the water contained in the prey they consume; they will also
drink at water sources during the dry summer period, especially
' when the prey supply is low. Because of high degree of human
and dog presence both at the quarry site and in the orchard area,
no track stations were positioned within these sites.
FIT
The track boards were baited with three flavors of "Friskies" cat
food, with the varieties being alternated on successive nights.
Tracks were initially identified in the field and then select
` prints were "lifted" from the plates with wide clear packing tape
for a permanent record_ During the second survey period boards
were positioned either under protective "natural" cover such as
overpasses, large debris items, etc. , or installed elevated board .
5
