F
t Abstract and Management Summary
Cultural resources investigations of a proposed 500-acre
gravel extraction area located in San Joaquin County, California,
within portions of Sections 6 and 7, T4S, R6E, M.D.B.M. , USGS
Solyo, CA 7 . 5-minute quadrangle, were conducted by a team from
the California State University, Stanislaus, Institute for
Archaeological Research. The cultural resources investigations
are based on data obtained from three principal sources:
(1) background research of ethnographic, historical and
archaeological data bases, including literature search;
(2) search of the records of the Central California
Information Center and other files pertaining to cultural
resources in the proposed project area; and
(3) direct field inspection of the proposed project area.
The first method of investigation of the proposed project
area revealed that no historic and archaeological cultural
resources occur on or near the subject area. The second method
of investigation indicated that the proposed project area was to
be considered moderately sensitive for cultural resources, due to
the occurrence of archaeological sites in comparable geographical
settings (i.e. , in streamside zones) in San Joaquin County. The,
third method of investigation revealed that the proposed project.
area exhibits one historic site (gravel extraction plant) .
However, this site does meet criteria to be considered eligible
for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, nor
can it be considered important or unique under CEQA regulations. ;
Accordingly, in reference to cultural resources, the
proposed project (development of a 500-acre gravel extraction '
area) may proceed, subject to the stipulations set forth in this
report pertaining to possible subsequent discovery of buried or
concealed archaeological sites.
v
