i <br /> �., CULTURAL RESOURCES INVESTIGATIONS OF A PROPOSED 500-ACRE <br /> r <br /> GRAVEL EXTRACTION AREA, <br /> SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA <br /> 1: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY <br /> Proposed Project <br /> Cultural resources investigations of a proposed 500-acre <br /> gravel extraction area San Joaquin County, California (Figures <br /> 1-4) , were requested by Mr. Michael Brown, on behalf of Brown <br /> Gravel, Inc. , Manteca, California. The investigations discussed <br /> in this report were conducted prior to commencement of the <br /> proposed project. <br /> The proposed project area is located at the point where <br /> Hospital Creek issues from the Coast Range into the San Joaquin <br /> r Valley. The proposed project area is transected northwest to <br /> southeast by Interstate Route 580. The area is south of the Hetch <br /> Hetchy Aqueduct and Blewett Road, west of Interstate Highway 5, <br /> and east of Bird Road. The proposed 500-acre project area <br /> consists of portions of the south half of Section 6 and portions <br /> of the northern half of Section 7, T4S, R6E, M.D.B.M. These <br /> sections are exhibited on the USGS Solyo 7.5-minute quadrangle <br /> map (Figure 2) . <br /> Scope and Purpose <br /> The purpose of these investigations was to (1) locate and <br /> record cultural resources within the proposed project area; (2) <br /> assess the potential significance or importance of potentially <br /> affected cultural resources; and (3) identify appropriate <br /> measures for management or treatment of significant cultural <br /> resources found within the project area of potential effects <br /> (APE) . <br /> The investigations discussed in this report include prefield <br /> research of the environmental, archaeological, ethnographic and <br /> historical background of the proposed project area, and <br /> description of field inspection of the project area. Direct <br /> field inspection of the proposed project area was conducted by <br /> the writer and two field assistants during 3 field days. <br /> The Phase I cultural resources investigations reported <br /> herein were conducted under the applicable provisions of the <br /> California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) of 1970 (revised <br /> 1985) . No prehistoric sites were found during cultural resources <br />
