2.1.1 Potential Contaminant Sources
Potential contaminant sources associated with the quarry include in-place overburden
exposed through excavation, reserves material exposed through excavation, and stockpiled
raw materials to be loaded on the conveyor system. It is the position of KRC Aggregate, Inc.
that the overburden and topsoil at the site are substantially the same and, as such,
overburden materials will be used in reclamation and rehabilitation.
2.2 Plant
The processing plant (Plant) is located south of the Quarry. For the Plan, the Plant consists
of the aggregate processing plant and the settling ponds. Figure 4 shows details of the Plant,
Offices and Vehicle Maintenance Shop. Figure 5 is a schematic illustration of the drainage
network for the Plant.
The aggregate processing plant consists of wash screens and drums, crushers, and vibrating
screens for size-separation of the aggregate. The processing plant is surrounded by stock
and spoils piles which are periodically removed or depleted.
Makeup water for the processing of aggregate is provided by a groundwater well and by
storm water retained and pumped during the storm season. Makeup water is captured and
pumped to a series of settling ponds. The water is pumped from the settling ponds and
recycled through the system. The settling process involves pumping the water into an initial
settling pond. The water then flows, via pipeline, into a secondary holding pond. A third,
spent pond, is situated to the south of the holding pond.
The ground surface in the Plant area has generally been graded and shaped. Some of the
area is covered with concrete pavement.
2.2.1 Potential Contaminant Sources
Potential sources of contamination associated with the plant include stockpiled product and
waste piles, as well as lubricant and hydraulic oil spills from mobile equipment malfunction.
23 Offices & Vehicle Maintenance Shop
The Offices & Vehicle Maintenance Shop (Offices), shown in Figure 4, include the truck
loading area, scales, existing trailer offices, permanent offices, shop and equipment wash
area currently under construction, and the entry and haul roads. The area is generally flat
lying with a slight slope to the east near the eastern edge of the property, to a northwest
flowing creek. The vehicle maintenance shop is an enclosed work area. Thus, storm water
should not come into contact with equipment or materials in that area. The equipment wash
area comprises a concrete pad adjacent to the shop.
