VI . SPILL PREVENTION
Where it is possible for oil spillage from storage tanks or
facilities to reach a stream, appropriate containment and/or
_ diversion structures or equipment must be employed. There are a
number of workable control systems that can be utilized, such as:
a) Dikes, berms or retaining walls sufficiently impervious
to contain spilled oil.
b) Curbing.
c) Culverting, gutters, or other drainage systems.
d) Weirs, booms or other barriers.
e) Spill diversion ponds.
f) Retention ponds.
g) Sorbent materials.
If new storage tanks or facilities are to be installed, the
need for control systems can be minimized if they are isolated from
the drainage area of streams.
Plant Management is responsible for ensuring that all
appropriate personnel are knowledgeable of the requirements
specified in this Plan and that all personnel are capable of
implementing the necessary control and reporting procedures, should
a spill occur. Plant personnel will conduct spill prevention
briefings initially and at intervals frequent enough to assure that
all personnel maintain an adequate understanding of the SPCC Plan.
Briefings should highlight and describe known spill events, problem
areas, and newly developed preventive techniques and control
measures.
_ The Plant Superintendent will assist in the training and
orientation of facility personnel as required.
Contractors
The following rules must be followed by all contractors and
vendors while working on the property of KRC Aggregate:
1. All work must be done in a manner which minimizes the
possibility of a spill of a hazardous nature.
2. Equipment may not be fueled, greased or oiled in a
location where any spillage could flow directly into a
waterbody.
3. An attendant must always be present during any fueling
operation.
4. Equipment should not be stored on or near catch basins or
channels where leakage of a hazardous substance could
flow into an adjacent waterbody.
8
