Soil Suitability&Nitrate Loading Study Page 5
St. Patrick's Church, Escalon, CA
Project No. 607.1
August 31, 2009
FJ'
4.0 GROUNDWATER RESOURCES
4.1 Depth and Flow of Groundwater
According to the maps contained in the San Joaquin County Flood Control and
Water Conservation District report entitled "Spring 2003 Groundwater Report",
(Appendix_B)-the-depQ_to first groundwater in this area lies at a depth of about
30 feet below ground Ievel a d the flow direction is generally toward the
southeast. Seasonal variatto in the depth to water in the area is typically in
t e range of sem e
y
The nearest open water in the area is the Stanislaus River, which lies about 3
i miles to the south.
4.2 Known and Potential Groundwater Contamination
j There are many possible sources of groundwater contamination including
leaking storage tanks, surface releases of hazardous materials, over-use of
agricultural chemicals, leakage from dairy lagoons, and septic sewage seepage.--
A
eepage.--A detailed investigation of potential groundwater contamination was beyond the i
,
scope of this investigation however, the State Water Board's "GeoTracker"
website http://geotracker.swrcb.ca.govl was searched to help identify possible
sources of nearby groundwater contamination. No such sites were identified
within one mile of the site. No nearby dairy lagoons or other common potential
sources of contamination were noted in the air photo.
Agricultural chemicals from off-site sources must be considered as possible
Fit sources of groundwater contamination at this site. In the up-gradient direction,
the nearest residential septic system is about Z/ mile away. Off-site septic '
systems are not believed to be likely sources of nitrates in the groundwater
} under the subject site.
4.3-_`alter Sampling and Analysis
A domestic wate ell is present on-site. Records pertaining to the well were
'ea_ e EHD, and information found suggests the well is 185 feet deep
and has a grout seal at 120 feet. The well is located near the north side of the
wall surrounding the house as shown on the site map in Appendix A.
Geo-Phase Environmental, I mpled the well on August 20, 2009. T e well
- was not equipped with a wellhea spi an hE sa 'las co ected from a
spigot at the front of the adjacent house. The water was allowed to run for
several minutes prior to the sample collection. This purged the aboveground
pipes and pressure tank and helped to help assure that the sample was fresh
Fj 2937 Veneman Ave.,#B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
