(ATC). The WP addresses directives issued by EHD by letter
dated 17 February 2004.
ATC proposes in the WP to advance one cone penetrometer testing (CPT) boring
in the former UST area to a total depth of 120 feet below surface grade to obtain a
continuous lithological log and to identify permable, saturated intervals from which
to obtain at least two hydropunch ground water samples and a soil sample for
laboratory analysis. The data is needed to demonstrate the vertical extent of
contaminants on the site in soil and ground water.
In addition, three Geoprobe borings will be advanced between MW-4 and MW-5 to
assess ground water in the sand commonly encountered between 15 and 25 feet
below surface grade (bsg) on the site. Soil samples will be collected from each
Geoprobe boring to characterize the hydrogeological framework; the ground water
samples will be collected to assess for dissolved gasoline constituents. All grab
ground water samples and selected soil samples will be analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons as jet fuel (TPH-j), TPH as gasoline (TPH-g), benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) and fuel oxygenates.
EHD approves the work plan, but recommends a target depth for the CPT boring
of approximately 50 or 60 feet bsg. This is based on data from the 7500 W. 11th St.
site, which appears to have a similar geological framework. In addition to having
wells set in the shallow sand unit, the 7500 W. 11th Street site has wells set in a
second sand interval from 25 to 31 feet bsg and in a third sand interval from 36 to
50 feet bsg. These sand units are separated by fine-grained units modeled to be
approximately 5 feet thick. The deeper sand units have both tested non-detect for
