Naturally
occurring micro-organisms thrive in the oxygen-enriched environment facilitated by
ORC; these aerobic microbes begin to degrade toxic organic hydrocarbon compounds
into harmless by-products. Typically, ORC will release oxygen for about six months to
one year. The manufacturer states that field test results have shown that ORC
significantly enhances the aerobic-bioremediation of contaminated soil and groundwater
more cost-effectively than alternative treatment methods.
Terra Vac downloaded a copy of the manufacturer ORC Applications Software from the
Internet. Terra Vac performed three application models to estimate the cost of the ORCs
required to treat the site. The three application models performed included;
• ORC slurry backfill
• ORC slurry injection into 31 geoprobes spaced 10 apart,
• Source treatment using eight monitoring wells spaced 9 feet apart.
Appendix G presents the three application model print outs. The ORC cost required to
remediate this site ranges from $194,000 to $216,000 exclusive of well or geoprobe
installation costs. A fourth application model used for unknown contaminant levels p
showed ORC costs of approximately $221,000. Total cost for remediating the site using i
this approach is conservatively estimated at $250,000 -- $300,000, Terra Vac is unable
to estimate the time required to complete the remediation using this method,
9.4 Vapor Extraction and Air Sparging
Terra Vac has determined that dual vapor extraction (I)VE) may not be an appropriate
remediation technology for the clean up of impacted vadose zone soils. In a letter report,
dated April 12, 1995, Terra Vac recommended soil vapor extraction augmented with air
it
Project 30-0212 13 caalton130-02121caplrev5lcap-rev5.doe
July 15, 1998 A I,
