The near surface of the geology underlying the site is comprised of unconsolidated alluvial
deposits of Pleistocene to Holocene age. These deposits, sometimes referred to as "older
alluvium", consist of intercalated beds of gravel, sand, silt, and clay. Underlying the older
alluvium are Plio/Pleistocene continental deposits of similar derivation and lithology (USGS
Professional Paper 1401-C, 1986). Soils developed on the alluvium are generally well drained,
differing.from the parent material only in the increased volume of organic matter (DWR Bulletin
No. 146, 1967).
4,.2 Soil Conditions
The soil under the site appears to be silty clay. Based upon subsurface investigations in the
vicinity of the subject property, soils at the site consist predominately of sandy silty clay with a
layer of well-graded sand.
4_3 Groundwater Conditions
Regional groundwater depth is reported to be between S and 10 feet below grade. The regional
inferred groundwater gradient is northwest (Smith Environmental, 1996).
:J
5.0 RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION
5_1 Site Inspection Observations
On March 22, 1996, Mr. William Madison of Smith Environmental Technologies Corporation
visited the site to document existing site conditions and to investigate any apparent evidence of
hazards or toxic materials on or near the site. Mr. Wade Helms of Piedmont was present during
the site visit. Observations noted during the site inspection are described below:
o The site appeared to be unmaintained and scattered with some debris. Small automobile
parts (i.e. bits of wire, gaskets, metal parts, etc.), a few empty quart-sized motor oil
containers and empty antifreeze containers, and glass were scattered about the site.
Standing water on soil on-site did not exhibit any sheens.
o On-site and adjacent vegetation generally appeared to be healthy and well-established and
did not exhibit signs of stress.
o No stained soil was observed on-site.
wA967301ph1rpt.doc 4 `
