(GTI) on behalf of the above referenced
site and has the following comments.
Comments-Soil Vapor Extraction Pilot Test Report
The "Report, Soil Vapor Ext(action Pilot Test" (Report) documents fieldwork that took
place on June 12, 2000, when a soil vapor extraction pilot test was conducted. There
are currently four soil vapor extraction wells onsite, screened as described below:
VEW-1 40 to 55 feet bsg
VEW-2 10 to 27 feet bsg
VEW-3 39 to 54 feet bsg
VEW-4 12 to 27 feet bsg
According to the monitoring data submitted with the report it appears there is pneumatic
communication between VEW-1 and VEW-4, and between VEW-2 and VEW-3. In
addition, monitoring well MW-1, which is located approximately 10 feet from the VEW-3/
VEW-4 cluster, is screened from 55 to 75 feet bsg. The data provided with the report
show that VEW-4, the shallow screened well, had greater influence on MW-1 than did
VEW-3, the deeper screened well.
In the conclusions section of the report, GTI states that VEW-2 and VEW-3 have less
lateral vacuum influence due to being screened in tighter geologic units than VEW-1 and
VEW-4. However, the cross sections included in the report indicate that VEW-2 is
screened in the same geologic unit as VEW-4, and that VEW-3 is screened in the same
geologic unit as VEW-1.
The report states that VEW-4, a shallow well, showed vacuum influence of greater than
0.1 inches of water out to all three monitoring wells, which are screened at depths of
greater than 55 feet bsg. However, the data table does not support this statement. The
maximum influence from VEW-4 recorded at MW-3 was 0.06 inches of water.
PHS/EHD suggests that the data need to be carefully reviewed. There may have been a
mislabeling of some wells during the pilot test, specifically of VEW-3 and VEW-4.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
